Leela James (The View From the “Cheap Seats” @SOB’s 3/25/2009)

Bob Davis Appears Courtesy of Soul-Patrol.net

Yeah, Leela James was off the hook once again. This time it was at the CD Release party for her new album and she performed with the same band that she had when I saw her in Philly last fall, except this time she had a horn section. SOB’s was jam packed and resembled a “sweatbox.” (where was the fire marshall???)

–She did 3 James Brown songs (“It’s a Man’s World”, “Doin It To Death”  & Make It Funky)

Leela James Flyer from SOB's March 25th 2009 Show

Leela James Flyer from SOB's March 25th 2009 Show

–She Did Bootsy Collins (“I’d Rather Be With You”)

–She did Betty Wright (“Clean Up Woman”)

–She did Rick James (“Give it to me”)

–She did Mavis Staples (“I’ll Take You There”)

–She did a few songs from her first album (including “Music”)

–She did the same “soul train line” with the audience that she did in Philly

–She even made fun of a white guy from the audience (just like she did in Philly)

But the thing that got me the most is that Leela James was able to make me dance to a song that I absolutely hate. She made me dance to a Frankie Beverly & Maze song (“Joy & Pain”)

It’s a well known fact that I simply can’t stand the music of Frankie Beverly & Maze (“hypnotic black muzak”)

However I got all sweaty dancing off of “Joy & Pain” with a very nice woman from Westchester, who in fact had to suffer being jammed up against me all night long inside of this packed club, way back in the “cheap seats” (actually there are no seats……LOL)

So I really gotta give it up to Leela James.

She is badd enough to get me to dance to a song that I can’t stand :)

(“so take a tip, ya betta get hip…”)

Album Review: Leela James

Leela James Lets Do It Again

Leela James "Let's Do It Again"

Bob Davis Appears Courtesy of Soul-Patrol.net

Leela James – “Let’s Do It Again”
(Black American Standard Music – Where da Party People At?)

I’m not quite sure why I’m even bothering to write this review. I
already know that some of yall aren’t going to like the album, Leela
James – “Let’s Do It Again”. That’s cuz it’s…

:::HARDCORE SOUL:::

Really and truly I don’t really have to say much more than this album is simply… “One that you wait for your parents to be away for the day, roll back the carpeting in the living room & dining room, remove all of the good glasses & plates that might break, invite your friends over, fry up some chicken wings, break out
the paper plates & plastic silverware, get a few bottles of Boone’s Farm/T-Bird and run the whole M*therF*ckin album from end to end and then run it back it again…” Any of yall who ever lived in the projects know exactly what kind of a party I’m talkin about. The album Leela James – “Let’s Do It Again”, can easily provide ALL of the music that you need for a party in the projects!!!

(Am I allowed to use the word FONK around here?)

This album exists in an “alternate universe” that’s sweaty, it’s
funky, there’s no health food, the term “dow jones industrial average” doesn’t exist in our vocabulary, and political correctness is something that we aren’t bothered with!!!

IT”S STANK/NASTAY

In short this album is a self contained, hellified, project apartment 4D house party, from an alternate universe that quite simply doesn’t exist, or does it? Well it’s a universe that exists for me. That universe is called…

:::HARDCORE SOUL:::

Check out this track listing….( You can listen to snippets of Leela’s Music Here: Leela James Music

1. Clean Up Woman

2. Miss You

3. It’s A Man’s Man’s Man’s World

4. Baby I’m Scared Of You

5. You Know How To Love Me

6. I Want To Know What Love Is

7. Nobody Know’s You When You’re Down And Out

8. I Try

9. I’d Rather Be With You

10. Simply Beautiful

11. Let’s Do It Again

Yes it’s true, you have heard these songs before. You may have even heard them in that “alternate universe” that I spoke of earlier. True enough Betty Wright, Al Green, Bootsy Collins, Mtume, Angela Bofil, Foreigner, the Rolling Stones, James Brown and other famous artists are covered here. (but you ain’t never heard these songs like this before)

It’s Jazz, Blues, R&B, Rock n’ Roll…….ain’t no “neo/creole” sh*t happening here.

It’s….:::HARDCORE SOUL:::

So therefore, I’m not certain how many of yall will dig an album of …

:::HARDCORE SOUL:::

That’s because it comes from that same “alternate universe” where although you planned everything perfectly for the party, grandma comes walking in suddenly, everybody stops dancing, grandma sees the mess, but listens to bout 10 seconds of the music, starts shakin her be-hind and says; “why did yall stop dancing?” (everyone smiles and starts dancing again).

It’s that “alternate unverse”, where Black folks dig the Rolling Stones, as long as you don’t tell them that is what is playing…

I can say with certainty that knee-grow (urban) radio stations won’t play it. Knee-grow (urban) radio stations don’t play…

:::HARDCORE SOUL:::

I can however say with absolute certainty that there will be songs from this album being played on:

Blues @ RadioIO.com

NuSoul @
RadioIO.com
http://www.radioio.com/channels/nusoul

RnB Mix @

Today’s
RnB @ RadioIO.com
http://www.radioio.com/channels/todays-rnb

Top 20
RnB Hits @ RadioIO.com
http://www.radioio.com/channels/top-20-rnb-hits

(look for it on these stations in the next few days)

This album is what mah boy the late Jon Gilbert used to call “an instant party in a box.” (from end to end….channeling Betty Wright at the beginning and Mavis Staples at the end)

:::HARDCORE SOUL:::

Some of yall aren’t gonna like this kinda music. However I can’t afford to worry about what the rest of yall are gonna like or not like right now, cuz I’m too busy right now pullin back the carpeting, “mrs. earthjuice” is frying up some chicken (in bacon grease), I just emailed a bunch of friends to come over here tonight and I’m callin up liquor stores to find out if I can get some Thunderbird here in the suburbs….

Although some of yall won’t like this music, cuz you really don’t want
to deal with

:::HARDCORE SOUL:::

(the young kids will be stealing it, they know what the real deal is…)

Tidbits, Random Thoughts,Trivial Pursuits

Bob Davis Appears Courtesy of Soul-Patrol.net

2009 is certainly shaping up to be quite an interesting year….

1. AIG -
Is an acronym which stands for “American International Group.” With such a nebulous & generic name is it any wonder that we have no idea what they are doing with our taxpayer dollars? These people had betta watch out. The kind of stuff they (and others in the Financial Services Industry) are doing is the same kind of stuff that got Marie Anttonette’s head chopped off during the French Revolution. I wonder just how much patience the American people are going to show?

2. HARDCORE SOUL MUSIC -
Yes Virginia, it’s coming back and it’s coming back STRONG. Stay tuned for artists like Leela James, Jill Sharpe

3. BERKS JAZZ FEST -
As we get closer to this event, I get more and more excited. I’ll be
there for both weekends along with a full staff of Soul-Patrol reporters covering a truly sick number of great jazz, blues, funk & soul shows. Go here and look at the lineup:

www.berksjazzfest.com/ticketedevents.htm

4. DATELINE LOS ANGELES – Are you a “Fast Food Funkateer?” Well if you are in Los Angeles please do not be alarmed if you are sitting down eating your WHOPPER or VEGGIE DELITE and you hear my voice coming thru the PA system (stay tuned)

5. DEREK MCKEITH -
I do want you to check out this interview (Windows Media Required)

Derek McKeith Interview

Derek McKeith is one of our best up & coming “Black Rockers” and we talk about just what that means from a past, present and future perspective. Not only does Derek have a great new album (set for release this month), that we have reviewed right here on Soul-Patrol, but we have been playing it over on Nu Soul @ RadioIO.com and getting great response over there.
More Derek McKeith Here

As you will see from this interview, Derek McKeith has also got some pretty interesting things to say about the state of “Rock n’ Roll” and it’s place in Black History.

Derek McKeith Part 3

The interview took place in NYC @ the popular spot Sweet Rhythm, just prior to Dereck’s SLAMMIN show, which I also emceed. In attendance as well that night were was Earl ‘The Pearl’ Monroe (Reverse Spin Records), Al Goodman (Ray, Goodman & Brown), Ken Webb, Allison Williams, Vaughan Harper and actress, Sheila Frazier(Derek’s mom) and others. You can view the interview at the following link:

Big up’s to our friend Ken Webb for producing this piece. If you go to Ken Webb’s site at the following link:

www.kenwebb.com/kenwebbshow.htm
You will see links not only to this inteview, but to a whole bunch of different kinds of video content that Ken has been producing lately, everything from Jazz to Soul and yes Virginia, even “Black Rock”….Check it all out and let me know whatcha think????

6. JAZZ, ROCK N’ ROLL & A WHOLE LOTTA SOUL -
I will be teaching a 3 part non credit course on the history of American Popular Music (Rock n’ Roll, Jazz and R&B) at Burlington County College next month. (stay tuned)

7. THANKS TO JIMI BLEU @ WFDU FM 89.1 (Listen Here)
I was a guest on his show this morning. We discussed Women & Blues Music, Berks Jazz Fest & the Carnegie Hall Black Music Honors Program, Bettye LaVette, Janis Joplin, Tina Turner, Alberta Hunter, Bessie Smith, Leela James, Beyonce and of course played some great music. I Tweeted during the interview and you can read my Tweets at

www.twitter.com/kozmicfunk

8. JOHN LEE HOOKER – is still what I wanna be like whenever I grow up.

(boom, boom, boom, boom)

My Personal “Soul Angel” for 2009

March 11th, 2009 / Filed Under: Music / No Comments / Tags: , , , ,

(Bob Davis appears Courtesy of Soul-Patrol.net)

Dat’s cuz Solonge is HARDCORE SOUL…

One of the things I like best about Twitter is that you can find out who is “real” and who “is not.” That’s because some people actually use the application the way it was intended to be used, while others say nothing (or say nothing of value.)

Solange Knowles is someone why truly wants the 23,000 people who are following her on Twitter to know what she is thinking about on a 24/7/365 basis. I am one of those 23,000 + people, simply because I am
truly a fan of her recent music. That’s because she’s doing HARDCORE SOUL!!!

Now Solange Knowles doesn’t know me, doesn’t know that I have become a HARDCORE FAN of the HARDCORE SOUL music that she has been delivering. She does what many of the “neo/creole” soul artists failed to do. And even if she did, it wouldn’t make any difference, cuz homegirl is serious as a heart attack with her 24/7/365 stream of conciousness via Twitter. Here is what she posted a few moments ago…

@solangeknowles: everyone is in a 60′s girl group reference. its like traditional r&b again to do the 60′s sound, look etc.

@solangeknowles: after i did i decided alot of folks were digging it but alot of folks thought were confused about “the look” now every which a way i turn..

@solangeknowles: of all the girl groups and asking my sis to help me come up with moves ( she had just done dreamgirls) worked my but off on references…

@solangeknowles: this was before amy winehouse so people thought i was truly bugging out. i did i decided wiith the two girls..watched about 25 old shows

@solangeknowles: wanting to create a new age 60′s girls group and modernize it. started working on soul-angel finding 2 girls and watching old shows

@solangeknowles: i remember being n Idaho 4 years ago, pulling out all my old Martha& the Vandellas, Marvelettes and Supremes records,coming up with a vision
_

And now you know why Solange’s song “6 O’Clock Blues” is one of the hottest songs on Nu Soul @ RadioIO.com

Do you like HARCORE SOUL? Then you should follow her also. (she’s real) @solangeknowles

NP: “6 O’Clock Blues”

Mixtape Movies . . . He Might Be Onto Something!

March 11th, 2009 / Filed Under: Music -Video / 1 Comment / Tags: , , , ,

Back in 2006 we had a phone conversation with Draze a video director/producer from Seattle. Rob Schwartz, www.whomag.net, set up the conference call. We listened as Draze talked about this concept of a mixtape movie where he would take scenes from popular movies, there would be lyrics around a storyline and wahlah a Mixtape Movie. Well it was more than that, but that was early 06. Draze was waiting for the final mix down edit and the this Mixtape Movie would be available in a few days.

We agreed to feature the Movie on EVN and assist with promotions. Rob S, the video promotion superstar, was going to promote it thru his various channels. When we finally got a chance to preview the MTM we knew that Draze was onto something. Once you watch the MTM . . . it has you. You don’t blink and you watch it a few times. Well actually several times. There was something about the rapper too, Prince of Thieves, he was right on point all the way through the MTM. You never see his face which made it interesting. The beat/track matched the storyline and flow. Trading Places the Mixtape Movie became one of EVN’s most popular videos.

Then as things can happen, life, business, economy and trying to figure out the next move . . . time keeps on ticking, ticking into the future. Fast Forward to 09. Draze calls . . . “What up Fam? Were ready to release Scarface!” WHAT? Scarface had been on hold for a minute. As usual once received we watched it several times.

A week later Draze calls . . . “What up Fam? Were ready to release Notorious”. . . And so they did.

Having watched this Mixtape Movie concept grow over time, all we can say is that were glad Draze had the Perseverance to PRESS ON when he could’ve given up. The difference is . . . Draze has a Goal and a Plan . . . and he’s working his Plan! There’s something that can be said for Thinking Out of The Box, loving what you do and StickToItTiveNess.

Much Respect to You Draze. Business man, father, promoter, producer, story writer, dreamer! Keep them coming!

(For the rest of us: One never can measure how many near successes they may have had but gave up too fast! YesWe Can!)

The following are Mixtape Movies. 1) Trading Places, 2) Scarface, 3) Notorious. www.mixtapemovies.com
