1. Ledisi’s new album is off the hook. Wanna know what it sounds like? Anybody here remember an artist named Betty Davis?

2. It was one thing for the United States to get their azz kicked by the North Vietnamese, by to be getting your azz kicked by the Taliban? At least the North Vietnamese had a country!

3. Don’t sleep on new music from Niki Richards, Melvin Gibbs, Charles Wilson (not the Gap Band guy, the other one), Will Downing, Chairmen of the Board, Calvin Richardson

4. What some folks don’t realize is that we already have a Universal Health Care system, it’s called the hospital emergency room

5. I started nodding off while I was listening to Whitney Houston’s new single

6. Don’t sleep on new music from George Benson, Charles Wright, Bill Curtis/Fatback, Mighty Sam McClain, Karl Denson, Lee Fields, N’Dambi & Unified Tribe

7. Why is Dr. Murray still in the country?

8. Facebook reminds me of AOL chat (with graphics)

9. TWISTED LOGIC: Remember back in the 1960′s when the Black Panthers would show up to political rallies sporting rifles & sidearms that they were legally able to carry and they were arrested. Over the past few weeks people are showing up at political rallies with rifles & sidearms and they haven’t been arrested. Did something change?

10. Don’t sleep on new music from Chico DeBarge, Jerry Lawson/James Power, Teena Marie, Bettye LaVette, Lubriphonic, Sugar Pie DeSanto, Chuck Loeb

11. Some good live shows I have seen recently: Charlie Wilson (the Gap band guy), Leela James, Sharon Jones/Dap Kings, Derek McKeith

12 Some up coming live shows that I am looking forward to seeing this month: Neville Bros/Dr John, Desi, George Benson/Ledisi

13. George Bush set up torture camps for people. Michael Vick set up a torture camp for dogs. Guess which one went to jail?

14. A lot of people I know are setting up their own internet radio station. Once everyone has their own station, who will the listeners be?

15. JOHN LEE HOOKER – is still what I wanna be like whenever I grow up.

(boom, boom, boom, boom)

Lobbying online to “help” Cathy Hughes save “KNEE-GRO”radiio

May 20th, 2009 / Filed Under: News -Politics / No Comments / Tags: , ,

Bob Davis Appears Courtesy of Soul-Patrol.com

I probably got more email from folks asking to lobby congress to defeat HR Bill 848 on behalf of Cathy Hughes, than I did about the passing of Waymon Tisdale.

That’s because Radio One’s owner Cathy Hughes was on the Tom Joyner Show recently begging for a black community bailout of black radio because of a proposed bill by Rep. John Conyers that would make radio stations have to shell out some major dollars to stay on the air.

The name of the bill is HR Bill 848 and frankly I am a supporter of it. This bill is designed to insure that terrestrial radio station pay the same performance royalties to artists that web casters (ex: Soul-Patrol) and satellite radio operators.

That sounds like a fair proposition to me…

So now Cathy Hughes is whining again.

I would suggest that she could do three things that might be helpful in formulating a direction for herself at this point:

1. Take a look at our friend Mark Anthony Neal’s brilliant essay called “Radio One’s “Save Black Radio” Campaign Misses the Mark” at the following link:

http://newblackman.blogspot.com/2009/05/should-black-radio-die.html

2. Take a look at our friend Minista Paul Scott’s brilliant essay called “Live or Let Die: Should We Save Black Radio?” at the following link: http://blackpoliticsontheweb.com/2009/05/14/live-or-let-die-should-we-save-black-radio

3. And of course she shyould also revisit the offer that I made to help her several years ago, which she can re-read at the following link. The offer is still open:

Hip Hop Appreciation Week 2009

April 29th, 2009 / Filed Under: Earwax News -Events -News -Politics / 1 Comment / Tags: ,

Note: This Blog Entry comes from Minister Server from The Temple of Hip Hop. Minister Server contact information below.

Peace and much Love Hiphoppas!

The Temple Of Hiphop is pleased to announce that Hip Hop Appreciation Week 2009 is May 17-24 and our theme for this year is “COOPERATION”! HHAW, always celebrated during the third week of May, is a time for Hiphoppas to de-criminalize the images of Hip Hop that are portrayed by the mainstream media.

Now is the time, more than ever, for COOPERATION in our communities. The Hip Hop community should work together to organize our people, our knowledge and our resources as we continue to work through the challenges we are facing domestically and globally!

There are many ways in which Hiphoppas can demonstrate COOPERATION, here are a just few suggestions. During HHAW we encourage Hiphoppas to intentionally:

- Work with individuals and organizations that are working to make your community better.
- Use HHAW as an opportunity to end personal disputes with anyone that you have had challenges with.
- Volunteer with non-profit organizations, share your gifts and talents with your community, i.e. teach a class, mentor a youth, etc.
- Network, build new alliances, form coalitions and partnerships that are mutually beneficial to all.
- Become involved with a neighborhood watch group, community beautification committee, etc.
- Create artistic collaborations using the various elements of Hip Hop culture.
- Live, Teach and Promote the principles of the Hiphop Declaration Of Peace.

HHAW gives Hiphoppas a great opportunity to show the world who we are, whose we are and what we are here to do! Remember, we are not doing hip-hop, we are Hiphop, word!

Video Soul History

Bob Davis Appears Courtesy of Soul-Patrol.net -

SOUL (The Old PBS TV Show)

Normally I have no interest in posting any links whatsoever to
video’s (especially the illegal one’s on YouTube, that would shut down
Soul-Patrol if we distributed them).

http://www.thirteen.org/soul/episodes/january-10-1973

However this is one case, where I am not only happy to post a link, but to also encourage you to share with others.

One of the very first questions that we got here on Soul-Patrol.com, back in the mid 1990′s was one to this effect: Does anyone out there remember the old PBS TV show called SOUL (hosted by Elis Hazlip) and if so where can we either see or purchase those old episodes?

–Until now, the official answer to that question was always:
“I dunno.”

–The “unofficial answer” was always:

“IT’S IN THE HANDS OF SOME GOD DAMN CULTURE BANDITS WHO ARE GETTING READY TO MAKE A WHOLE BUNCH OF MONEY ONCE AGAIN RIPPING OFF BLACK CULTURE”

Today I am pleased to report that you can go to the following link and view these classic programs right in the place where they should have always been available. The website of WNET, channel 13 in NYC/Newark, the TV station where these shows were originally broadcast.

http://www.thirteen.org/soul/episodes/january-10-1973

I’m pleased to report that I spent a fair amount of time at the site
yesterday watching one of my favorite broadcasts from the series, which featured an in studio concert with Earth, Wind & Fire.

I remember watching this episode when it was originally broadcast in 1973 (I was a senior in HS at that time). The quality of the video is simply stunning. I had only previously seen it of course on a black & white TV set. This stuff is in color and it looks to me to be in very high quality.

And of course the “color” is important, never before or since has there ever been a more “afrocentric” TV program. The effect is so stunning, that it even made me shed a tear of nostalgia for the kind of “organic” afrocentric mindset that the show enabled.

http://www.thirteen.org/soul/episodes/january-10-1973

And of course the music is totally off the chain. IT’S ASTANK AZZ BASS, GUITAR, KALIMBA, DRUMS, COMNGA, etc. It’s Earth, Wind & Fire at the very height of their power as one of the most essential Funk bands of it’s generation (prior to their big sellout a few years later), doing songs like POWER, “DON’T LET ME BE LONLEY TONIGHT” (feat Jessica Cleaves on lead) and some kinda untitled off the chain FUNK JAM that I couldn’t get enough of.

http://www.thirteen.org/soul/episodes/january-10-1973

Go & check it out, in all there are about 9 different episodes from the series posted on Channel 13 website for your viewing pleasure.

And be sure to share this with your children so they can get a glimpse of why people like myself cry when we view stuff like this and lament: “this is the way it was all supposed to be…”

Stop Snitchin? I’m Snitchin – Who really started “No Snitchin”

January 31st, 2009 / Filed Under: Earwax News -Politics / No Comments / Tags: , ,

stopsnitchinpic Stop Snitchin? I’m Snitchin Who really started No Snitchin
    I’M SNITCHIN’!
The Media is to blame, not Hip-Hop

    By Hotep

(Earwax Digital 1st posted this article on our Myspace page August 24th 2007, we get so many emails about it that we decided to repost it here on our blog.)

I didn’t want to write this article. In fact, I’ve held back the temptation for the last 5 months (since Cam’ron appeared on 60 minutes). My hope was that the hypocrisy would die down quickly. But with the recent upsurge of the “Stop Snitchin” campaign in the media, I felt it necessary that I put an end to the nonsense once and for all.

It is absolutely ABSURD for anyone to insinuate that the concept of not snitchin’ came from Hip-Hop. This is simply NOT TRUE. The truth is, “not snitchin” is a very deeply ingrained aspect of our nation’s cultural fabric. Here are a few areas that demonstrate the No Snitchin’ Code. None of them have a thing to do with Hip-Hop.

Anyone who ever watched the movie, The Godfather caught at least a glimpse of the very real ITALIAN Mafia. The Mafia was notorious for having a code of silence when dealing with the police. I can’t count how many times I’ve heard the terms “rat” or “stool pigeon” used in Casino, Goodfellas or even the popular HBO series The Sopranos. We are all very familiar with the “no snitchin” code in this context AND the severe punishment for breaking this rule. Is the media trying to claim that these movies were purely fictional?

Right now, in elementary schools across the United States, teachers can be heard saying, “Stop tattling” or “Don’t be a tattle tale” to their students. Is this some new trend started by Hip-Hop? NO! I’m sure all of us can remember being instructed to stop “ratting” on classmates at least once in our younger days.

Even children have their own “no snitchin” code. Or am I the only one who has ever had a classmate who was infamous for being a tattle tale? No one wanted to play with that child; he/she was often ostracized by his/her peers. Why does the media blame this “phenomenon” amongst our youth on Hip-Hop?

It is true, that we as Black Folk in America have had a history of avoiding contact/ communication with the police; but this is mainly out of distrust and fear. Need I remind the media of the innumerable atrocities inflicted upon us by our own “Justice Department”?

On top of that, anyone who watches Law and Order as much as I do has seen the police regularly trapping, abusing, coercing and otherwise bullying witnesses. After watching a couple episodes, even the most straight-laced citizen (Black OR White) would think twice about getting involved in a criminal case.

Yes, the thuggish, ultra-violent and misogynistic elements of American Culture have infiltrated (and now seem to dominate) the positive elements of Hip-Hop music. But let’s not forget, the same is VERY TRUE of every other aspect of our society.

Over the last 20 years, video games, songs, movies and TV shows  have all suffered from a severe morale decline. Back in 1987, Nintendo’s Super Mario Brothers ruled the video game world and The Cosby Show was one of the top TV programs. Compare this to the R-rated video games and the common use of the words “Ass” and “Bitch” in T.V. shows of 2007. It is plain to see that today’s image of Hip-Hop is only reflecting the same changes the American macrocosm is witnessing. Why then, does Hip-Hop always seem to be the blame for our society’s ills?

The media purposely distorts our perception of reality and diverts our attention from the true problem….. greed! Our country is run by CORPORATIONS, not government. These corporations practice extreme capitalism, which has no moral regulations. They did it! Their love of money is root of all their evils. They did it! They OWN & DISTRIBUTE the super-violent video games, sexually explicit songs/ movies and morally depraved TV shows that plague our minds. They did it! These corporations also own the very same media that we rely on for our daily information, which targets Hip-Hop as the scapegoat for our country’s biggest problems.

Put simply, in the words of the legendary Hip-Hop group Public Enemy, “Don’t believe the hype!”

    (P.S. How’s that for snitchin’?)
