I am listening to this album as I am typing this. Anyone else here (besides me) a fan of George Benson???
———-

National Endowment of the Arts Jazz Master and 10X Grammy-winning, legendary musician George Benson will release his new album on August 25th entitled Songs and Stories, his second for Concord Records / Monster Music. The album is a collection of tunes penned by some of the most prolific and enduring songwriters of the last half-century. Some
were written specifically for this new recording, such as Bill Withers’ (who came out of retirement to write “A Telephone Call Away” for George), Rod Temperton’s “Family Reunion” and Lamont Dozier’s “Living in High Definition”; while others, including James Taylor’s “Don’t Let Me Be Lonely Tonight”, Donny Hathaway’s “Someday We’ll All Be Free” and Tony Joe White’s “Rainy Night in Georgia” were hand-picked by Benson for their ability to convey simple but universal truths about the human experience.

Songs and Stories was produced by Concord’s Grammy winning, creative head John Burk and renowned bassist /composer / producer Marcus Miller. Benson, Miller, keyboardist Greg Phillinganes, guitarist Jubu and drummer John Robinson make up the core unit for the project. They were joined by special guests: guitarists Lee Ritenour, Steve Lukather, Wah Wah Watson and Norman Brown, vocalists Lalah Hathaway and Patti Austin, keyboardist David Paich, saxophonists Tom Scott and Gerald Albright along with several others. “Brother, with that team, you can do just about anything,” said Benson. “We recorded in the studio for three days straight, and everything we touched had something on it that made us all glad we were there. It was just the right mix of people and material.”

And yet, for all of the high-caliber musicians on hand, the most important guests are the songwriters, says co-producer Miller. “Smokey Robinson doesn’t perform on this record, but he’s still a guest,” he says. “Lamont Dozier is a guest. Bill Withers, Rod Temperton and James Taylor are guests. If you take great songs from writers like these, and you put them in the hands of George Benson and a great band, you’d better just get out of the way and let things happen, because the result is going to be something great.”

Indeed, the record captures the somewhat underappreciated essential brilliance of his storied career; the ability to simply touch people through authentic lyrics and beautiful melody. On Songs and Stories, George Benson’s musical artistry has perhaps never been on sharper display.

To celebrate the release of Songs And Stories, fans can visit the official Benson website, georgebenson.com and receive a free mp3
download of “Living In High Definition”, the new song written by legendary composer Lamont Dozier. Additionally on the website, fans can view “The George Benson Sessions: The Making Of Songs And Stories”, a rare, behind-the-scenes look at the making of the new record. The series will be updated with a new video each week leading up to and through the August 25 release.

Concord Records is proud to once again partner with Monster Music on presenting the newest George Benson album Songs and Stories on High Definition Surround Sound SuperDisc. The Monster version, also available August 25th, is a specially priced two-disc package that consists of Songs and Stories on compact disc mixed in traditional stereo and a bonus DVD, containing Monster’s High Definition Stereo and Surround mixes. In addition, the bonus DVD features behind-the-scenes video footage of the making of the record including an in-depth interview with George Benson. With its innovative High Definition Surround technology Monster Music is revolutionizing the listening experience. Mastered in the highest resolution possible, HDS SuperDiscs are specially engineered to capture the true harmonic depth and tonal richness of the music. THX certified HDS SuperDiscs deliver the music through a 5.1 speaker system just the way the artist heard it in the studio when it was recorded, the way they intended you to hear it.

PRESS RELEASE: Will Downing/’Classique’….coming June 16th

Bob Davis Appears courtesy of Soul-Patrol.net

This is a bazz azz album. I’ve been listening to it for about a week. In fact, I snuck the first single (“Something Special”) from here into the rotation last week on the Nu Soul @ RadioIO channel: http://www.radioio.com/channels/nusoul

I can only hope that not only will the single do well, but that other songs from the album are released as singles also…
———-

Taking his inspiration from the French term Classique – an author, artist or work of art, of the highest excellence – Will Downing returns with his 14th collection of sensual grooves and true love primers.

‘Classique’ is his second album for Peak Records (in stores June 16 via the Concord Music Group) and a triumphant encore presentation following the challenges he faced creating his Peak debut, ‘After Tonight’ (recorded while battling the muscle disorder Polymyositis). Back in top form, Downing’s sensitive touch is felt throughout the project – singing, writing, arranging and producing, the latter mostly in collaboration with his dear friend and much-in-demand ace Rex Rideout.

Listen to the smooth & sensual first single, “Something Special” Listen To The Latest From Will Downing Here.

Excerpts from Press Release:

Will Downing – Peak Records / Concord Music Group Classique’ – Available June 16th

Highlights of ‘Classique’ include the hypnotic tick-tock pulse of “More Time” (a recurring theme of Will’s regarding finding more hours in the day for love), the feel-good summer groove “Something Special” and what will surely become this album’s top contribution to his personal best canon “I Won’t Stop”, a passionate backbeat driven declaration of eternal love. He waxes especially spicy on the clever “Just Think About It” and in the sexy vocal he shares with singer Sherrida on the funky call and response breakdown of “Love Suggestions”.

As always, Downing respectfully dips back into the timeless wax of old for three numbers. Interestingly, all three of them are songs originally made famous by three legendary gentlemen of Soul. The first is “Baby, I’m For Real”, a monumental 5-weeks-at-#1 smash first penned, produced and arranged by Marvin Gaye in 1969 for his favorite Motown vocal quartet, The Originals. Will recaptures that group vibe by sharing the mic with Phil Perry, whose powerful tenor and trademark falsetto flights play dynamically against his own smooth baritone. Perry, who was a member of just such a singing group called The Montclairs, taps into that experience with overdubbed harmonies.

Next is a stroll through Barry White’s very first hit from 1973, “I’m Gonna Love You Just A Little More Baby”, Will’s version of which also recently graced the Rideout-produced compilation ‘The Strength of a Woman’ (in support of breast cancer research for African American women). Finally there’s Will’s version of original Temptations lead tenor David Ruffin’s 1976 solo masterpiece “Statue of a Fool” (a.k.a. “Name It After Me”), a cover of the 1969 Jack Greene country classic that is among Ruffin’s most poignant recordings. Will tenderly delivers the evocative lyric as well as the heavenly backing harmonies for a rendition that goes straight to the heart.

Beyond the music, Downing is a conscientious humanitarian, proven by his role as a spokesperson for the American Stroke Association which has become even more important to him in the wake of prominent victims such as Luther Vandross, Ron Isley and Coretta Scott King. Whenever possible on tour, Downing conducts the charity bowling event “Strike Against Stroke” to raise funds towards greater stroke awareness and education in the African American community, which is disproportionately affected. The American Heart Association awarded Mr. Downing for his efforts, honoring him as a Celebrity Ambassador in their Power to End Stroke national campaign. Off the road, Will indulged his love for photography by self-publishing the 2005 coffee table book ‘Unveiled Series I’, and relishes his ultimate life roles of loving husband and father.

‘Classique’ is quintessential Will Downing from start to finish.a quiet but emphatic statement on the strength and confidence this Brooklyn native has garnered as he celebrates his 20th anniversary as “The Prince of Sophisticated Soul” – a career in which the man and his artistry have been recognized for excellence from NARAS to the NAACP.

Leela James (The View From the “Cheap Seats” @SOB’s 3/25/2009)

Bob Davis Appears Courtesy of Soul-Patrol.net

Yeah, Leela James was off the hook once again. This time it was at the CD Release party for her new album and she performed with the same band that she had when I saw her in Philly last fall, except this time she had a horn section. SOB’s was jam packed and resembled a “sweatbox.” (where was the fire marshall???)

–She did 3 James Brown songs (“It’s a Man’s World”, “Doin It To Death”  & Make It Funky)

Leela James Flyer from SOB's March 25th 2009 Show

Leela James Flyer from SOB's March 25th 2009 Show

–She Did Bootsy Collins (“I’d Rather Be With You”)

–She did Betty Wright (“Clean Up Woman”)

–She did Rick James (“Give it to me”)

–She did Mavis Staples (“I’ll Take You There”)

–She did a few songs from her first album (including “Music”)

–She did the same “soul train line” with the audience that she did in Philly

–She even made fun of a white guy from the audience (just like she did in Philly)

But the thing that got me the most is that Leela James was able to make me dance to a song that I absolutely hate. She made me dance to a Frankie Beverly & Maze song (“Joy & Pain”)

It’s a well known fact that I simply can’t stand the music of Frankie Beverly & Maze (“hypnotic black muzak”)

However I got all sweaty dancing off of “Joy & Pain” with a very nice woman from Westchester, who in fact had to suffer being jammed up against me all night long inside of this packed club, way back in the “cheap seats” (actually there are no seats……LOL)

So I really gotta give it up to Leela James.

She is badd enough to get me to dance to a song that I can’t stand :)

(“so take a tip, ya betta get hip…”)

My Personal “Soul Angel” for 2009

March 11th, 2009 / Filed Under: Music / No Comments / Tags: , , , ,

(Bob Davis appears Courtesy of Soul-Patrol.net)

Dat’s cuz Solonge is HARDCORE SOUL…

One of the things I like best about Twitter is that you can find out who is “real” and who “is not.” That’s because some people actually use the application the way it was intended to be used, while others say nothing (or say nothing of value.)

Solange Knowles is someone why truly wants the 23,000 people who are following her on Twitter to know what she is thinking about on a 24/7/365 basis. I am one of those 23,000 + people, simply because I am
truly a fan of her recent music. That’s because she’s doing HARDCORE SOUL!!!

Now Solange Knowles doesn’t know me, doesn’t know that I have become a HARDCORE FAN of the HARDCORE SOUL music that she has been delivering. She does what many of the “neo/creole” soul artists failed to do. And even if she did, it wouldn’t make any difference, cuz homegirl is serious as a heart attack with her 24/7/365 stream of conciousness via Twitter. Here is what she posted a few moments ago…

@solangeknowles: everyone is in a 60′s girl group reference. its like traditional r&b again to do the 60′s sound, look etc.

@solangeknowles: after i did i decided alot of folks were digging it but alot of folks thought were confused about “the look” now every which a way i turn..

@solangeknowles: of all the girl groups and asking my sis to help me come up with moves ( she had just done dreamgirls) worked my but off on references…

@solangeknowles: this was before amy winehouse so people thought i was truly bugging out. i did i decided wiith the two girls..watched about 25 old shows

@solangeknowles: wanting to create a new age 60′s girls group and modernize it. started working on soul-angel finding 2 girls and watching old shows

@solangeknowles: i remember being n Idaho 4 years ago, pulling out all my old Martha& the Vandellas, Marvelettes and Supremes records, coming up with a vision
_

And now you know why Solange’s song “6 O’Clock Blues” is one of the hottest songs on Nu Soul @ RadioIO.com

Do you like HARCORE SOUL? Then you should follow her also. (she’s real) @solangeknowles

NP: “6 O’Clock Blues”

Mixtape Movies . . . He Might Be Onto Something!

March 11th, 2009 / Filed Under: Music -Video / 1 Comment / Tags: , , , ,

Back in 2006 we had a phone conversation with Draze a video director/producer from Seattle. Rob Schwartz, www.whomag.net, set up the conference call. We listened as Draze talked about this concept of a mixtape movie where he would take scenes from popular movies, there would be lyrics around a storyline and wahlah a Mixtape Movie. Well it was more than that, but that was early 06. Draze was waiting for the final mix down edit and the this Mixtape Movie would be available in a few days.

We agreed to feature the Movie on EVN and assist with promotions. Rob S, the video promotion superstar, was going to promote it thru his various channels. When we finally got a chance to preview the MTM we knew that Draze was onto something. Once you watch the MTM . . . it has you. You don’t blink and you watch it a few times. Well actually several times. There was something about the rapper too, Prince of Thieves, he was right on point all the way through the MTM. You never see his face which made it interesting. The beat/track matched the storyline and flow. Trading Places the Mixtape Movie became one of EVN’s most popular videos.

Then as things can happen, life, business, economy and trying to figure out the next move . . . time keeps on ticking, ticking into the future. Fast Forward to 09. Draze calls . . . “What up Fam? Were ready to release Scarface!” WHAT? Scarface had been on hold for a minute. As usual once received we watched it several times.

A week later Draze calls . . . “What up Fam? Were ready to release Notorious”. . . And so they did.

Having watched this Mixtape Movie concept grow over time, all we can say is that were glad Draze had the Perseverance to PRESS ON when he could’ve given up. The difference is . . . Draze has a Goal and a Plan . . . and he’s working his Plan! There’s something that can be said for Thinking Out of The Box, loving what you do and StickToItTiveNess.

Much Respect to You Draze. Business man, father, promoter, producer, story writer, dreamer! Keep them coming!

(For the rest of us: One never can measure how many near successes they may have had but gave up too fast! YesWe Can!)

The following are Mixtape Movies. 1) Trading Places, 2) Scarface, 3) Notorious. www.mixtapemovies.com
