This was a straight up spiritual experience today at the Apollo Theatre. It was the ‘Church of Michael Jackson” up in there today and it was something that I was quite unprepared for. You see I had been to the Apollo a few years ago for what was essentially the “wake” of James Brown. I had expected this event, less than a week after the passing of Michael Jackson to be much the same. I couldn’t have been more wrong.

There was no dead body on the stage, as there was at the James Brown wake.. Instead there was a lone barstool, with a familiar looking black fedora, a familiar pair of black shades and a single familiar white sequined glove resting on top of the seat cushion of the barstool. The spotlight shined on the barstool and the items resting on the seat cushion of the barstool glowed.

The crowd entered the lower level of the Apollo in an orderly fashion. They all seemingly had on Michael Jackson T-Shirts, Michael Jackson Baseball caps. Some carried handmade/store brought Michael Jackson banners and posters.

Jonelle Procope CEO and President of the Apollo then came out to speak. She talked about how folks came to the Apollo as soon as they heard about the news of Michael’s passing. Rev Al came out and talked about how the Jackson’s started here at the Apollo and he made the world recognize OUR CULTURE. Congressman Charlie Rangel came on and gave greetings from the Congressional Black Caucus. All of what they had to say was important and most fitting to the occasion. However what they had to say was nearly meaningless after what came next.

And what came next was an EXPLOSION. It was sheer joy.
It made me smile from ear to ear. And it made me understand perhaps for the first time, just why Michael Jackson is/was as big as he is/was.

What came next was indescribable using text. You really had to be there..

If I say something like..

“For the next 30 minutes the packed Apollo crowd was treated to a Michael Jackson MASTER MIX + VIDEO SHOW with legendary rapper CHUBB ROCK leading the crowd”

Then most of you will say “big deal.”

..and you would be correct.

IT WAS A BIG DEAL

In fact it was something pretty damn close to: ::::MAGIC:::::

It can’t be compared to being at any musical event I have ever been to. It was something like being at an amusement park and just watching the joy & happiness on the faces of the people. It was as though it didn’t matter that he had died. People singing.
People dancing. People screaming his name in unison.
The packed Apollo was turned into a house party, for sure.
People “freaking.”
People “moonwalking.”
Young people.
Old people.
Black
White
Hispanic
It was as though there was a “rebirth” right there inside of the Apollo.

NOBODY WAS CRYING

The vibe was incredible. The entire Apollo bonded together as one. I’ve been a Michael Jackson fan since 1969. But after today THE SONGS mean more than they ever did to me before.

When I took the subway back to Penn Station, I encountered two young white girls. They had on Michael Jackson paraphernalia, so I decided to interview them. One was 22 and the other was 23. Neither had been born yet when the “Thriller” album was released.

Later as I added up the sum total of the day, what I had seen, what I had heard, the people I talked with, the people I didn’t, plus the general glow surrounding the Apollo today, I finally came up with a person from the past to compare Michel Jackson to.

It’s not a musical artist. It’s Walt Disney. It occurred to me that Walt Disney was a visionary, who was all about the same kinds of things that Michael Jackson was about. I think that it’s fair to say that Walt Disney had a world view with respect to technology, culture, education and more was similar to that of Michael Jackson.

Except for one difference.

Unlike Walt Disney, Michael Jackson really did figure out a way to place himself into a state of “suspended animation.”

WE HAVE HIS SONGS, WHICH WILL BE HERE FOREVER.

…..And every single time someone spins a record.
Or

….Loads in a CD

Or

…..Clicks a mouse.

Or

….perhaps in the future, summons up a hologram

Over some object, physical or meta physical with the name

::::JACKSON::::

He is going to reappear, and it will be just as if he had never left.

And we are going to smile just as soon as we hear his voice.

Even Walt Disney can’t do that, from the great beyond….

Update: The music of Micheal Jackson live from the Apollo on 6/31/2009 emceed by Chubb Rock, Remarks from Rev Al Sharpton, Apollo President/CEO Jonelle Procope and Congressman Charles Rangel, On site interviews with Queen Mother/Mayor of Harlem, Devena + Two Funky White Chicks. Additional music by Norman Connors and Mellisa Forbes. Broadcast introduced by Joe Jackson, and hosted by Bob Davis

My Reflections on Michael Jackson

Bob Davis Appears Courtesy of Soul-Patrol.net

I was just interviewed and asked to give my reflections on Michael
Jackson.

Here is what I said, I don’t know if this is how they will run it . . .

“Michael Jackson was a cultural icon that surpassed all others that you might be tempted to compare him to. Unlike others such as Elvis, the Beatles or others, the legacy created by the Jackson’s was
TOTALLY ORIGINAL.

The Jackson’s created something out of nothing and Michael
Jackson was the star of that something. Although that might be
considered to be an amazing thing, Black Americans have been creating something out of nothing since the beginning of time!

Michael Jackson became the most famous person on the face of the earth because of his role in creating something that ultimately he found a way to eclipse. So in effect he first created a star for his family and then created an even bigger star for himself.

I don’t think that anyone else has come close to accomplishing that!”

Album Review: Teena Marie – Congo Square

I am totally fascinated by Teena Marie and after listening to her new album called “Congo Square” I am now convinced that after all is said & done, she will become recognized as not only one of the most popular artists of her generation, but also as one of the most innovative in an arena not previously known for its innovation.

Of course like most people I was introduced to her in the late 1970’s via her association with Rick James. And of course I was a big fan along with everyone else of her recorded output in the 1980’s. Lots of hit records in an updated funk style that owed as much to Minnie Riperton as much as it did to Rick James. It was funky, erotic and playful all at the same time, in a very entertaining manner. Most of all Teena injected her personality (even a litte bit of rap on “Square Biz”) into her songs in a way that endeared her to her audience of funkateers, who by now were no longer teenagers, but were now in their late 20’s/early 30’s. Of course these people were no longer called “funkateers” in the 1980’s. They were now considered to be the core of an audience that was now called “Urban Contemporary” and also the target audience of a similarly named nationwide radio format with the same name.

Today that radio format is called “Urban Adult Contemporary” and honestly most of the people who called themselves “funkateers” during the 1970’s think that this format is horrible. That’s because neither the format nor the music has grown with the audience. In fact much of the format and the music insult the audience. However the “Urban AC” format continues to be financially successful because it’s audience feels that it has no alternative. Much of the music is either “bad new stuff” from older artists or “bad new stuff” from newer artists. And as a result the audience has to “settle.”

Fast forward to 2009 and the album “Congo Square”, Teena Marie has done something for her audience that is totally unexpected, and completely welcome. Imagine if you could take the very best of 1980’s “soul/funk” and pretend that the ravages of rap music had not completely rendered “soul/funk” music impotent during the 1990’s? Imagine instead that it had continued to advance musically along it’s projected path starting in about 1985, continuing till 2009. Imagine how good that music would sound. It would be funky, it would be erotic, it would be personal, it would have substance and it would connect with you and your lifestyle. And it would be delivered to you by someone that you feel totally comfortable with, who had also endured the very same up’s & downs offered by post affirmative action America.

“Congo Suare” is really two albums for the price of one.

Album #1 (tracks 1-9) is one of the best “Urban Adult Contemporary” albums that has been produced in 15 years. One of the reasons why it sounds so good is because Teena Marie knows her audience and is a master of knowing what their expectations are. She knows that what they want is something that is based on 1980’s soul/funk, but she also knows that they want something that sounds fresh, but at the same time speaks to them on an extremely personal level. She delivers for her audience a soul music sonic masterpiece in a manner that someone like Alicia Keyes could never deliver, because Alicia Keyes doesn’t yet have the “battle scars.” And she does it in a way that respects the past as she brings it up to date.

Album #2 (tracks 10-16) is something special and Teena Marie is possibly the ONLY white artist who could successfully pull it off. Album #2 (tracks 10-16) from a lyrical content perspective, sounds more like something Gil Scott-Heron or Sly Stone or the Last Poets or the Neville Brothers or Nina Simone might do. It’s in effect as if she is saying, “Black folks, YALL need to sit down, shut up and let Lady Tee take yall to school for a while about your own history, cuz yall are getting ready to screw yourselves.” Teena Marie does indeed take us to school as she addresses topics like the true meaning of “Congo Square” in music history, the true meaning of the Blues, an ode to Mrs. Corretta Scott King, the impact of soldiers separated from their families by war.

This is all done in a jazzy/funky/bluesy style that will remind you of the late 70’s/early 80’s style of Lonnie Liston Smith or Donald Byrd or Freddie Hubbard, etc. She is doing nothing short of telling Black folks that “regardless of how badly you are being treated by others, absolutely nobody else besides you is responsible for passing your values & your history on to your children, so stop passing the buck and start doing what you & I BOTH know YOU are supposed to be doing, before it’s too late.” No other white artist could even conceive of getting away with this besides Teena Marie. Here is a big clue as to why. A few years ago I attended a Teena Marie concert at the Dell East in Philadelphia, where she literally “tore the roof off the sucka.” The crowd was transfixed/transformed by the sheer power of her music. After observing this I went around and interviewed several fans, asking them the question; “How come yall love Teena Marie so much, she’s a white woman…” One 40 year old Black woman answered me like this; “Teena Marie isn’t white, she’s one of us…”

Leela James (The View From the “Cheap Seats” @SOB’s 3/25/2009)

Bob Davis Appears Courtesy of Soul-Patrol.net

Yeah, Leela James was off the hook once again. This time it was at the CD Release party for her new album and she performed with the same band that she had when I saw her in Philly last fall, except this time she had a horn section. SOB’s was jam packed and resembled a “sweatbox.” (where was the fire marshall???)

–She did 3 James Brown songs (”It’s a Man’s World”, “Doin It To Death”  & Make It Funky)

Leela James Flyer from SOB's March 25th 2009 Show

Leela James Flyer from SOB's March 25th 2009 Show

–She Did Bootsy Collins (”I’d Rather Be With You”)

–She did Betty Wright (”Clean Up Woman”)

–She did Rick James (”Give it to me”)

–She did Mavis Staples (”I’ll Take You There”)

–She did a few songs from her first album (including “Music”)

–She did the same “soul train line” with the audience that she did in Philly

–She even made fun of a white guy from the audience (just like she did in Philly)

But the thing that got me the most is that Leela James was able to make me dance to a song that I absolutely hate. She made me dance to a Frankie Beverly & Maze song (”Joy & Pain”)

It’s a well known fact that I simply can’t stand the music of Frankie Beverly & Maze (”hypnotic black muzak”)

However I got all sweaty dancing off of “Joy & Pain” with a very nice woman from Westchester, who in fact had to suffer being jammed up against me all night long inside of this packed club, way back in the “cheap seats” (actually there are no seats……LOL)

So I really gotta give it up to Leela James.

She is badd enough to get me to dance to a song that I can’t stand :)

(”so take a tip, ya betta get hip…”)

Album Review: Leela James

Leela James Lets Do It Again

Leela James "Let's Do It Again"

Bob Davis Appears Courtesy of Soul-Patrol.net

Leela James – “Let’s Do It Again”
(Black American Standard Music – Where da Party People At?)

I’m not quite sure why I’m even bothering to write this review. I
already know that some of yall aren’t going to like the album, Leela
James – “Let’s Do It Again”. That’s cuz it’s…

:::HARDCORE SOUL:::

Really and truly I don’t really have to say much more than this album is simply… “One that you wait for your parents to be away for the day, roll back the carpeting in the living room & dining room, remove all of the good glasses & plates that might break, invite your friends over, fry up some chicken wings, break out
the paper plates & plastic silverware, get a few bottles of Boone’s Farm/T-Bird and run the whole M*therF*ckin album from end to end and then run it back it again…” Any of yall who ever lived in the projects know exactly what kind of a party I’m talkin about. The album Leela James – “Let’s Do It Again”, can easily provide ALL of the music that you need for a party in the projects!!!

(Am I allowed to use the word FONK around here?)

This album exists in an “alternate universe” that’s sweaty, it’s
funky, there’s no health food, the term “dow jones industrial average” doesn’t exist in our vocabulary, and political correctness is something that we aren’t bothered with!!!

IT”S STANK/NASTAY

In short this album is a self contained, hellified, project apartment 4D house party, from an alternate universe that quite simply doesn’t exist, or does it? Well it’s a universe that exists for me. That universe is called…

:::HARDCORE SOUL:::

Check out this track listing….( You can listen to snippets of Leela’s Music Here: Leela James Music

1. Clean Up Woman

2. Miss You

3. It’s A Man’s Man’s Man’s World

4. Baby I’m Scared Of You

5. You Know How To Love Me

6. I Want To Know What Love Is

7. Nobody Know’s You When You’re Down And Out

8. I Try

9. I’d Rather Be With You

10. Simply Beautiful

11. Let’s Do It Again

Yes it’s true, you have heard these songs before. You may have even heard them in that “alternate universe” that I spoke of earlier. True enough Betty Wright, Al Green, Bootsy Collins, Mtume, Angela Bofil, Foreigner, the Rolling Stones, James Brown and other famous artists are covered here. (but you ain’t never heard these songs like this before)

It’s Jazz, Blues, R&B, Rock n’ Roll…….ain’t no “neo/creole” sh*t happening here.

It’s….:::HARDCORE SOUL:::

So therefore, I’m not certain how many of yall will dig an album of …

:::HARDCORE SOUL:::

That’s because it comes from that same “alternate universe” where although you planned everything perfectly for the party, grandma comes walking in suddenly, everybody stops dancing, grandma sees the mess, but listens to bout 10 seconds of the music, starts shakin her be-hind and says; “why did yall stop dancing?” (everyone smiles and starts dancing again).

It’s that “alternate unverse”, where Black folks dig the Rolling Stones, as long as you don’t tell them that is what is playing…

I can say with certainty that knee-grow (urban) radio stations won’t play it. Knee-grow (urban) radio stations don’t play…

:::HARDCORE SOUL:::

I can however say with absolute certainty that there will be songs from this album being played on:

Top 20
RnB Hits @ RadioIO.com
http://www.radioio.com/channels/top-20-rnb-hits

(look for it on these stations in the next few days)

This album is what mah boy the late Jon Gilbert used to call “an instant party in a box.” (from end to end….channeling Betty Wright at the beginning and Mavis Staples at the end)

:::HARDCORE SOUL:::

Some of yall aren’t gonna like this kinda music. However I can’t afford to worry about what the rest of yall are gonna like or not like right now, cuz I’m too busy right now pullin back the carpeting, “mrs. earthjuice” is frying up some chicken (in bacon grease), I just emailed a bunch of friends to come over here tonight and I’m callin up liquor stores to find out if I can get some Thunderbird here in the suburbs….

Although some of yall won’t like this music, cuz you really don’t want
to deal with

:::HARDCORE SOUL:::

(the young kids will be stealing it, they know what the real deal is…)

Tidbits, Random Thoughts,Trivial Pursuits

Bob Davis Appears Courtesy of Soul-Patrol.net

2009 is certainly shaping up to be quite an interesting year….

1. AIG -
Is an acronym which stands for “American International Group.” With such a nebulous & generic name is it any wonder that we have no idea what they are doing with our taxpayer dollars? These people had betta watch out. The kind of stuff they (and others in the Financial Services Industry) are doing is the same kind of stuff that got Marie Anttonette’s head chopped off during the French Revolution. I wonder just how much patience the American people are going to show?

2. HARDCORE SOUL MUSIC -
Yes Virginia, it’s coming back and it’s coming back STRONG. Stay tuned for artists like Leela James, Jill Sharpe

3. BERKS JAZZ FEST -
As we get closer to this event, I get more and more excited. I’ll be
there for both weekends along with a full staff of Soul-Patrol reporters covering a truly sick number of great jazz, blues, funk & soul shows. Go here and look at the lineup:

www.berksjazzfest.com/ticketedevents.htm

4. DATELINE LOS ANGELES – Are you a “Fast Food Funkateer?” Well if you are in Los Angeles please do not be alarmed if you are sitting down eating your WHOPPER or VEGGIE DELITE and you hear my voice coming thru the PA system (stay tuned)

5. DEREK MCKEITH -
I do want you to check out this interview (Windows Media Required)

Derek McKeith Interview

Derek McKeith is one of our best up & coming “Black Rockers” and we talk about just what that means from a past, present and future perspective. Not only does Derek have a great new album (set for release this month), that we have reviewed right here on Soul-Patrol, but we have been playing it over on Nu Soul @ RadioIO.com and getting great response over there.
More Derek McKeith Here

As you will see from this interview, Derek McKeith has also got some pretty interesting things to say about the state of “Rock n’ Roll” and it’s place in Black History.

Derek McKeith Part 3

The interview took place in NYC @ the popular spot Sweet Rhythm, just prior to Dereck’s SLAMMIN show, which I also emceed. In attendance as well that night were was Earl ‘The Pearl’ Monroe (Reverse Spin Records), Al Goodman (Ray, Goodman & Brown), Ken Webb, Allison Williams, Vaughan Harper and actress, Sheila Frazier(Derek’s mom) and others. You can view the interview at the following link:

Big up’s to our friend Ken Webb for producing this piece. If you go to Ken Webb’s site at the following link:

www.kenwebb.com/kenwebbshow.htm
You will see links not only to this inteview, but to a whole bunch of different kinds of video content that Ken has been producing lately, everything from Jazz to Soul and yes Virginia, even “Black Rock”….Check it all out and let me know whatcha think????

6. JAZZ, ROCK N’ ROLL & A WHOLE LOTTA SOUL -
I will be teaching a 3 part non credit course on the history of American Popular Music (Rock n’ Roll, Jazz and R&B) at Burlington County College next month. (stay tuned)

7. THANKS TO JIMI BLEU @ WFDU FM 89.1 (Listen Here)
I was a guest on his show this morning. We discussed Women & Blues Music, Berks Jazz Fest & the Carnegie Hall Black Music Honors Program, Bettye LaVette, Janis Joplin, Tina Turner, Alberta Hunter, Bessie Smith, Leela James, Beyonce and of course played some great music. I Tweeted during the interview and you can read my Tweets at

www.twitter.com/kozmicfunk

8. JOHN LEE HOOKER – is still what I wanna be like whenever I grow up.

(boom, boom, boom, boom)

My Personal “Soul Angel” for 2009

March 11th, 2009 / Filed Under: Music / No Comments / Tags: , , , ,

(Bob Davis appears Courtesy of Soul-Patrol.net)

Dat’s cuz Solonge is HARDCORE SOUL…

One of the things I like best about Twitter is that you can find out who is “real” and who “is not.” That’s because some people actually use the application the way it was intended to be used, while others say nothing (or say nothing of value.)

Solange Knowles is someone why truly wants the 23,000 people who are following her on Twitter to know what she is thinking about on a 24/7/365 basis. I am one of those 23,000 + people, simply because I am
truly a fan of her recent music. That’s because she’s doing HARDCORE SOUL!!!

Now Solange Knowles doesn’t know me, doesn’t know that I have become a HARDCORE FAN of the HARDCORE SOUL music that she has been delivering. She does what many of the “neo/creole” soul artists failed to do. And even if she did, it wouldn’t make any difference, cuz homegirl is serious as a heart attack with her 24/7/365 stream of conciousness via Twitter. Here is what she posted a few moments ago…

@solangeknowles: everyone is in a 60’s girl group reference. its like traditional r&b again to do the 60’s sound, look etc.

@solangeknowles: after i did i decided alot of folks were digging it but alot of folks thought were confused about “the look” now every which a way i turn..

@solangeknowles: of all the girl groups and asking my sis to help me come up with moves ( she had just done dreamgirls) worked my but off on references…

@solangeknowles: this was before amy winehouse so people thought i was truly bugging out. i did i decided wiith the two girls..watched about 25 old shows

@solangeknowles: wanting to create a new age 60’s girls group and modernize it. started working on soul-angel finding 2 girls and watching old shows

@solangeknowles: i remember being n Idaho 4 years ago, pulling out all my old Martha& the Vandellas, Marvelettes and Supremes records, coming up with a vision

Mixtape Movies . . . He Might Be Onto Something!

March 11th, 2009 / Filed Under: Music - Video / 1 Comment / Tags: , , , ,

Back in 2006 we had a phone conversation with Draze a video director/producer from Seattle. Rob Schwartz, www.whomag.net, set up the conference call. We listened as Draze talked about this concept of a mixtape movie where he would take scenes from popular movies, there would be lyrics around a storyline and wahlah a Mixtape Movie. Well it was more than that, but that was early 06. Draze was waiting for the final mix down edit and the this Mixtape Movie would be available in a few days.

We agreed to feature the Movie on EVN and assist with promotions. Rob S, the video promotion superstar, was going to promote it thru his various channels. When we finally got a chance to preview the MTM we knew that Draze was onto something. Once you watch the MTM . . . it has you. You don’t blink and you watch it a few times. Well actually several times. There was something about the rapper too, Prince of Thieves, he was right on point all the way through the MTM. You never see his face which made it interesting. The beat/track matched the storyline and flow. Trading Places the Mixtape Movie became one of EVN’s most popular videos.

Then as things can happen, life, business, economy and trying to figure out the next move . . . time keeps on ticking, ticking into the future. Fast Forward to 09. Draze calls . . . “What up Fam? Were ready to release Scarface!” WHAT? Scarface had been on hold for a minute. As usual once received we watched it several times.

A week later Draze calls . . . “What up Fam? Were ready to release Notorious”. . . And so they did.

Having watched this Mixtape Movie concept grow over time, all we can say is that were glad Draze had the Perseverance to PRESS ON when he could’ve given up. The difference is . . . Draze has a Goal and a Plan . . . and he’s working his Plan! There’s something that can be said for Thinking Out of The Box, loving what you do and StickToItTiveNess.

Much Respect to You Draze. Business man, father, promoter, producer, story writer, dreamer! Keep them coming!

(For the rest of us: One never can measure how many near successes they may have had but gave up too fast! YesWe Can!)

The following are Mixtape Movies. 1) Trading Places, 2) Scarface, 3) Notorious. www.mixtapemovies.com
